February and March are such busy quilty months! Check out some upcoming events and add your own in the comments.

February 21-22, 28- March 1 Nubian Heritage Quilters Guild show

Every two years, the Nubian Heritage Quilters Guild brings a spectacular assortment of quilts and wall hangings to the Crane House and Historic YWCA. This years exhibit “In the Spirit of Freedom” celebrates the 20th anniversary of the he Nubian Heritage Quilters Guild. Come view the quilts and watch as they demonstrate hand piecing, machine piecing, rotary cutting and applique techniques. Special Exhibits include: Modern Art Masterpieces, Gee’s Bend Quilts, Prayer Flags, Surprise Art Quilts, Colored Girls Quilts, Dolls, and Pin Cushions.

Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children. Children under 7 are free. Exhibit dates: February 21-22, 1-4 PM and February 28 to March 1, 1-4 PM.

March 5-8 Quilt Fest

March 14 (DEADLINE FEBRUARY 20) – Brownstone bus trip to Lancaster

The Brownstone Quilter’s Guild will be running a trip to the AQS show in Lancaster, Pa. on Saturday, March 14, 2015. The cost of the trip is $60.00 and includes the bus fare, entrance to the quilt show and a tip for the bus driver. If you or any members of your respective guilds are interested in taking the trip please send a check in the amount of $60.00 made out to the BROWNSTONE QUILTERS GUILD to my home address (EMAIL NJMQGINFO AT GMAIL.COM FOR ADDRESS) before February 20th. Be sure to include your cell phone number on the check. The bus will be at the parking lot of the Armenian Presbyterian Church located at 140 Forest Avenue, Paramus, 07463 at 7:15AM for a departure time of 7:30AM. Park to the right side of the parking lot. We should be back in Paramus at about 7:00PM

The North Jersey Chapter of the American Sewing Guild is welcoming quilt teacher, designer and humorist Mark Lipinski as our guest speaker for our April 25th Spring Fling event. We hope you will join us!! The event, which includes lunch, door prizes, and Mark’s wonderful Quilt Journey trunk show and lecture, is from 11:30 am-3:30 pm at the Lafayette Place, Old Lafayette Village, Routes 15 & 94, Lafayette, N.J. Lecture/Workshop announcement: Heather Jones is coming to NJMQG!

We are so very excited to announce our very first lecture workshop program for 2015– Heather Jones. The lecture on May 1st will be open to the public (free to NJMQG members). Online registration for the May 2nd workshop will begin for NJMQG members on March 2 and will open to non-members on March 9 if any of the 20 spots remain open.

About Heather:

Heather Jones is a designer and self-taught quilter who lives outside of Cincinnati, Ohio with her husband and two young children. She is the founder and former president of the Cincinnati Modern Quilt Guild. Three of her original quilts were chosen as winners of the Modern Quilt Guild’s Project Modern Challenges, a year-long national quilting competition, and she is a two-time finalist for the Martha Stewart American Made Awards. Heather is often inspired by everyday places and things, and is excited by the challenge to translate that inspiration into her work. Heather has a great love and respect for the traditional art of quilting, is an avid collector of vintage quilts, and loves to bring a modern twist to traditional patterns. Her modern quilting patterns are available at a number of online locations and she will soon be bringing the Heather Jones Studio patterns to print as well. Heather’s first solo book, “Quilt Local” published by STC Craft | Melanie Falick Books, an imprint of Abrams, will be released in the fall of 2015.

Lecture: Color Theory and Interaction for the Modern Quilter

Friday, May 1, 2015 – Free to NJMQG members, $10 for visitors

In this lecture, Heather will teach the basics of color theory and color interaction, and how to apply those ideas to quilting projects. She will discuss the major fundamentals of color theory, how different colors relate to each other, and how a color can be influenced by other colors that surround it. Heather will also discuss the importance of listening to your own creative intuition when working with color and how to create a unique color library as well.

Full-Day Workshop: Improvisational Pineapple Block – Limited to 20 students

Saturday, May 2, 2015, $65 for members (registration starts March 2), $75 for non-members (registration starts March 9)

In this workshop Heather will teach you how to create improvisationally pieced pineapple blocks. While the traditional version of this block can be somewhat intimidating to create, it becomes more relaxed and approachable when combined with improvisational piecing as there is no need for precise measuring or cutting. This technique produces completely unique, one of a kind blocks with a strong graphic quality, and Heather will discuss how fabric placement and color choices affect the design of the block. Students will finish the class with a number of completed blocks that can be used in small patchwork projects or as the beginning of a larger quilt.

Challenge: The Land That Never Was

At Thursday’s monthly meeting, we announced our latest challenge! Cloud9 Fabrics has partnered with the NJMQG to show off the skills of our members as well as some new designer fabric.

The Land That Never Was is the latest line of organic quilting cotton from Lisa Congdon for Cloud9 Fabrics. Participants in the challenge got to blindly pick three fat eighths from the collection to make into a block. They can use just the prints and Kona White to make a block that is 12.5 inches on two sides, whether length or width. They can make the other dimension as big or small as they like.

Blocks are due at the September meeting on Thursday the 26th. Winners will be chosen by Michelle and Gina of Cloud9, and we will be announcing a prize from Rock Paper Scissors! All of the blocks will be collected and made into a quilt to be donated to a worthy cause.

I can’t wait to see what our challenge participants do with the bold colors and imaginative characters! There’s also some great text prints. Stay tuned.
