April 2024 Guild Meeting Recap

Hello friends! Hope you are all well and able to get some in some quilty time in. Spring is springing, and aside from allergies, I’m grateful to see all the flowers and green, so much green!! We had a lovely April meeting with 25 members joining us. A special welcome to our new members Molly and Sue and our 2 guests Jane and Mary. And congrats to Jeanine welcoming in another grandbaby!

We had a little bit of business to take care of. Annette recap the treasurer’s report for us, and as always if you have any questions you can always reach out. We had a name tag swap, with 22 members taking part. I did not manage to get any pictures of those…As a reminder, we have our free table, anything you bring that doesn’t get taken, please bring it home with you. Since Kelly couldn’t make it to the meeting, we are extending the charity block deadline to our May meeting. The person who makes the most blocks will get a little prize, so get to sewing! This charity block is a quick and easy one.

We pulled our first raffle ticket and congrats to Betsy F for being our first winner of the day.

Also coming up in May, we will be announcing the candidates for the board elections. June is when we will hold our elections, and Rachel has so kindly offered to lead that for us. This will be our first in person election since 2019. The positions we have open are, VP, treasurer, programs and secretary. If you would like to run for a board position, or help out in some other way, we would love to hear from you!

MJ, was our second raffle winner (and again, I missed the photo)

We had some overviews and updates on the Philly field trip, Mid Mod (some pics below) and talked about some upcoming programming. Mark your calendar for some upcoming dates. After our May and June meetings we will have open sew time (Saturdays May 18th and June 15th). Saturday July 13th, there will be a Shibori dying workshop held at Margy’s house in Clifton. Our July and August meetings will be held over Zoom on Thursdays the 18th and 15th, respectively.

Our next meeting is on Saturday May 18th at 11:00. We will be meeting at our new space at the First Lutheran Church of Montclair, at 153 Park St. Don’t forget to bring any show and tell, charity blocks
and/or any project you’d like to work on during the open sew. See you then! Happy sewing!

October 2023 NJMQG Meeting Recap

Hello and welcome to the October recap. This month we met over Zoom. We had 41 people joining us, including some new friends, Cecila, Arlene and Nina. Thanks for joining us, and hope to see you soon!

This month we started our meeting off with our usual guild business. Annette gave us a treasurer’s report, which as always, can be found in the member’s only section of the website.

Last month we hosted our very first Quilt Showcase, and it was just so wonderful! We had about 200 people come to see the show and we sold our MQG charity quilt! The money from that sale will be donated to Oasis Haven and Rachel Coalition. We want to thank everyone who helped pull it together, with a special thanks to the showcase committee and and extra special shout out to our president Ann, who took the reigns and totally went for it. We are looking forward to our next one, in 2025.

Some announcements were next. We took a poll about our 2024 meeting schedule. Based off the results, we will have 8 meetings in person and 4 virtually. When meeting in person we will also be going to a new location. We will be letting everyone know all those details soon!

Mid Atlantic Mod Retreat will be April 18-21 and our 10 lucky early registrants have gotten in. Regular registration has also opened and there is a waitlist if you’d like to get on it.

We have some committee updates. Did you know we have a library? Books and rulers are available for borrowing. Caroline Hayes will be our new guild librarian. We are also looking for a new head to our charity committee. Please reach out if you are interested in helping out.

At our September meeting we started working on our MQG Community Quilt. Since then we have the top and back completed and Carol M will be quilting it. Looking forward to seeing that come together!

Programs is working hard behind the scenes to bring us some fun and exciting things in the new year. Before the new year starts, though, we had a field trip to Cultured Expressions for a workshop with Lisa Shepard Stewart.

November 4, we are celebrating International Scrap Sorting Day with the MQG. Let’s get organized!!

In November we have our meeting on the 16th , at 7, over Zoom. December we will have our holiday party on December 2 from 11-3 at the Community Church of Cedar Grove. Jeanine is leading the planning on this, but any help is welcome, reach out to her at vicepresident at njmqg dot com. For January we have a lecture and workshop scheduled with Libs Elliot. If you don’t know her, you should really check her stuff out. Libs will be joining our January 18 meeting over Zoom to give us a lecture. Then keep your calendar open for January 20, for a workshop over Zoom for the Bloem quilt.

We have some other things in the works and are looking forward to sharing more with you soon!

We kept it short this month! see you in November!

September 2023 Guild Meeting

Hello! Hi! How are you? September has come and gone, but we can’t forget all the fun we had at our in person meeting for September. Despite the rainy day, we has 38 members and 3 guests joining us. Welcome to Emily, Blake and Noa Joe!

First things first, we got some updates and reminders from Ann. Our Showcase of modern quilts was coming up and we were collecting the quilts in the front. Pick up would be the end of day Sunday or Monday morning during breakdown, but anyone not available at those times was asked to please make arrangements with Ann. There was a Sign-up genius link for all members to volunteer hours.

Mid Atlantic Mod retreat had exactly 10 members enter the lotto, and so all of the lucky entrants will be going to Mid-Mod! Yay! Congrats!

We had a vote on the MQG Community Outreach quilt and we chose a design. The blocks were available to work on during open sew or to take home. Here’s one block.

The board is working hard behind the scenes on reviewing the budget, looking at potential new spaces for our in person events and frequency of meetings. We will be presenting the proposed budget in October and there was a poll to fill out about meeting in person. We will continue to update you all in the coming months.

We had a fun time swapping postcards with the Baltimore MQG. We will have more pictures on our October Zoom meeting, but some of us got to show them off in person. (well, I took a pic of mine hung up in my studio)

Our member Karen Fricke gave us a great talk about her work and some of the techniques she uses. I have never been so inspired to use bugs in my quilting! Thank you so much for sharing Karen! She will be hosting a workshop with us soon.

We took a little break and pulled some raffle tickets! Congrats to MJ, Karen, Maureen and Noa Joe!!

Then Show and Tell. It impresses us every time!

Ginny- Perfect Illusion

Pat- Bag Saturday Sampler

Emily

Holly- Tie dye with Kelly Free pattern on Janome

Rochelle- Garment bag Sally Tomato kit Vest

Karen- Bonnie Hunter- Talking Turkey

Debby- Kantha summer quilt (look out she’s found some inspiration!!)

MJ- charity quilt made with fabric from free table

Betsy V- mini’s for Curated Quilts challenges

Latifa Saafir 25″ clam template and bag pattern

Robin- Jen Kingwell Handpiecing class

Wanda- Kawandi style, Sankofa- Colors of a Baltimore Childhood

We had a couple of Programs things. Betsy was taking sign ups for those interested in taking a field trip to Lisa Shephard Stewart’s space for a workshop, October 25th. We signed up to be a part of Quiltfolk’s free directory. Save the date for our Holiday Party December 2, 11-3. We are looking for a few good volunteers to help us in coordinating that. Betsy is wondering who may be interested in taking a class with Kirsten Fisher making fabric bowls. We know we have had requests for free-motion and applique classes, so we are keeping that in mind for the coming year. Another workshop to look forward to, already on the schedule, is Libs Elliott on January 21! Then we had some lunch, some good conversation and sewing!

So much more fun to look forward to! Hope everyone stays well, enjoys the fall weather and gets their quilt on! As always, let any board member know any questions, concerns, or anything you’d like us to share with the guild. Our next meeting is Thursday October 19th over Zoom! See you then!
