Quilty Question?

Hello, all!  Ashley here with a new weekly segment we’ll be sharing on the blog: Quilty Question.  We can’t wait to hear your responses and have conversations started on the blog.  Make sure you comment and return next week for the next question….

No matter how many times I create a budget, designers keep coming out with new lines of fabric.   Inevitably, this means I need new fabric, and it might even require me to cancel a hair appointment or two….  Just this week, I finally made it to my first hair appointment since June, and low and behold, I’ve already spotted two new lines that I need.  (Yes, need.)  Do you ever have this “problem,” too?

Have you seen the newest color line from V and Co due out next Spring?

V and Co.: V and Co: properly introducing Color Me Happy for Moda Fabrics

Or Anna Maria Horner’s new line, True Colors due out this fall?

email : Webview : Fall is Beautiful & New with Anna Maria!

With lines like these coming out soon, I’m wondering how long it will be before my hair sees scissors again?  What upcoming lines are you looking forward to this year?  Come on, share.  Trust me, my budget has a little wiggle room to add a few more….

Meeting this Thursday

MEETING THIS THURSDAY!
Our next meeting is this Thursday, October 17! Can you believe it? That came quick. Remember to bring your chair, nametag and this week, any scraps you may have from the Cloud9 The Land That Never Was Challenge. We’re going to start planning the finished quilt, and every scrap helps. (If you want to keep them, that is fine, but we’ll need scraps, Kona White and Kona Black for the backing.)

The board will also be presenting our recommended dues for 2013, which must be passed by 2/3 of attendees, so this will be an important one.

OPEN SEW
Our first Open Sew was a lot of fun! This is just a reminder that the next one will be held on Thursday evening, November 7 at the Church of Latter Day Saints in North Caldwell.

HOLIDAY SWAP

At our December meeting on December 19, we will be having a Secret Santa-style gift swap! The plan is to make a trinket (pin cushion, change purse) or pass on some cute fabric (FQs are perfect gifts for quilters) with a $10-15 limit. We’re going to use an online organizer called Elfster, so keep an eye on your inbox for the invitation. You’ll be able to enter any preferences you have, as well as favorite colors and fabric designers. Sign-up is completely optional and 100% anonymous.

THE MODERN QUILT GUILD NEWSLETTER
The Modern Quilt Guild is launching a new newsletter with membership information and free patterns! Sign up is here. We will have more information about our NJMQG group on the national site soon.

Open Sew recap

We had a small turnout but a fun time at our first Open Sew on Thursday morning. Stephanie graciously hosted at the Church of Latter Day Saints in North Caldwell. They have plenty of room for lots of people and big projects.

We started by working on the memory quilt that Stephanie talked about at our September meeting. A friend of her husband’s lost her son in an accident, and she had asked Stephanie to make multiple quilts for family members with her son’s t-shirts. It was very emotional holding them and cutting them, but Stephanie, Daniela and Melanie started cutting squares and rectangles from the logos on the shirts. The next step was to iron them to a fusible stabilizing fabric. We made several dozen pieces, which was a good start for this project.

Diane arrived after braving some highway traffic on her way from Bergen county, and everyone ooh and ahhed over her featherweight machine. She brought a paper piecing projects. Then Daniela started laying out a quilt for her son on the floor.

As we got talking, we started sharing tips and tricks. Well, Diane started showing us some great stuff, including “magic binding” and a really smart quilting use for a Dr. Scholl’s product. We also talked about our favorite movies, quilt field trips and amazing hair stylists.

We’re so excited for the next Open Sew on November 7. It will be in the evening, so members with day jobs can come if schedules permit. Mark your calendars!
