Charity Drive: Orlando MQG Quilts For Pulse

The Orlando Modern Quilt Guild is collecting quilts for the victims of the recent shooting at Pulse nightclub.

The NJMQG has registered as a guild to make and send one completed quilt.

At our guild meeting tomorrow, June 16, we will have a sign up sheet for guild members  who can contribute one or more blocks. We ask that you use this tutorial from Cluck Cluck Sew for the 10-inch finished block (or this paper piecing version by Elizabeth Dackson). You will sign up to make a specific color (or colors). More details about the background color will be given tomorrow night at the meeting.

You can also read more about it here on the MQG site and check out the Instagram hashtag: #quiltsforpulse. The blocks will be due at the July meeting.

*If you cannot attend the meeting and would like to contribute a block or blocks, please email njmqginfo at gmail dot com. We will sign you up and assign a color.

JUNE 2016 OPEN SEW!

:: OPEN SEW ::

As announced at our May guild meeting, we have an OPEN SEW coming up!

WHEN: Saturday, June 4, 2016 from 10am – 2pm
WHERE: Community Church of Cedar Grove, 65 Bowden Street, Cedar Grove, NJ (where we meet for our monthly guild meetings)

Please see Tracy’s message about the Charity project for the day:

The Quilt of Valor pattern we will be using is “Kite Tails” by Amy Friend, it was the MQG August 2014 free pattern of the month. The quilt blocks are large, 12″ x 18″, and are made using paper piecing.

We have enough red, blue, and cream/tan donated patterned fabric for the bow tie shapes (but feel free to bring patriotic fabric if you would like to donate more) but we will need plain white quilting cotton for the background. Just pure white, if the tones are a little off in shade it’s fine since this is a scrappy pattern. For each block I recommend a 1/4 yard, it’s more than each block will need but then it will be easy to paper piece and not stress over having the right sized scrap.

Here is the pattern: Kite Tails August 2014 Pattern
A 60″ x 72″ quilt requires 20 blocks. We should hit that easily! If you’re an experienced paper piecer this is simple, if you’re new hopefully my quick demo will make sense. We might need sewing buddies that day!

As always, you may also work on other NJMQG charity quilts or your own personal projects at this Open Sew. 🙂

Please remember to pack your lunch. If you would like, please bring a snack or drinks to share. Also remember to bring extension cords. If you have an extra task light for your station, that may help, too.

See you then!

June Mug Rug Swap

Mug Rug Pinterest

It was announced during the May meeting that we’ll be hosting a Mug Rug swap at the June meeting.

What’s a mug rug you ask? It’s a mini quilt that’s typically used as a coaster.

For our swap, we’ll be making mug rugs approximately 5″ x 5″ and in shades of the Pantone Color of the Year: Radiant Orchid.

If you’d like to participate, create one mug rug approx.  5″ x 5″ made with a top, batting, backing, and binding. We have created a Mug Rug Inspiration board on the NJMQG Pinterest page to help you get the creativity flowing…go check it out!

Bring your Mug Rug to the June meeting – anyone who makes a Mug Rug will receive one.

Any questions? Leave a comment and we’ll respond!
