When: hard start @ 7:15 – we’ve got a guest! Sara Trail of the Social Justice Sewing Academy will be joining us to speak about Quilting an Intergenerational Community: Youth, Fabric & Activism

We’d love to see your faces at our meeting this Thursday – we’ll open it up at our usual time at 7pm to get set up, and we’ll start promptly at 7:15

Our guest this month: Sara Trail founder and Executive Director of the Social Justice Sewing Academy.

The Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) is a youth education program founded in 2017; it aims to bridge artistic expression using textile media with activism to advocate for social justice. Through a series of hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country, SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change. Many of the young people make art that explores issues such as gender discrimination, mass incarceration, gun violence and gentrification. The powerful imagery they create in cloth tells their stories. These quilt blocks have been displayed in museums, galleries and quilt shows across the country. This visual dialogue bridges differences in race, age and socioeconomics and sparks conversations and action in households across the country.

Join Sara Trail in this inspiring talk as she shares how youth use quilting as a platform of personal expression through the Social Justice Sewing Academy.

Meeting details – We’ll start our meeting by quickly saying hello then jumping in to hearing from Sara, then after our Q&A we’ll have our guild updates and have our UFO & Show & Tell shares.

Helpful ZOOM reminders – While we have our guest, please be mindful and mute your microphone. Check your video & audio settings before we start and don’t hesitate to ask if you need some guidance about where your settings are. Since we plan on a Q&A time, familiarize yourself with the ZOOM buttons: there is a chat button that looks like a speech bubble. Feel free to use this to ask questions during her talk.
