July 16th Meeting Recap

Thursday night, time to Zoom! We had 42 members on the call.

And so begins the 2020-2021 board year of NJMQG! We thank the out going board members of the programs team, Crista Bresnahan and Janet VanTreuren and welcome in the new team of Jeanine Bowen, Sue Erdreich and Samantha Linehan. Can’t wait to see what the team brings us this year!

Guild Business

We had two new members join us last night, Casey Olesko and Carol Poplaski. Welcome!

Treasurer Lenny presented our Q2 report. We currently have 81 members. We had a very successful fundraising effort, raising over $1500 for Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. This was achieved through participation in the Connected Project.

Congratulations goes out to our member Aleeda Crawley who was selected to be on the Board of Directors for the Modern Quilt Guild!

Blueprint/Craftsy announced they are coming back in September 2020.

Social Justice Sewing Academy

Jeanine provided us an overview of the wonderful work these amazing artists are involved in, making  artistic expressions with activism to advocate for social justice. We discussed opportunities to get involved with the process through Remembrance Blocks. To learn more about SJS Academy, go to their website and click on the ‘get involved’ tab.

June 18th Meeting Recap

Hello Guild! We’ve made it to summer! Hoping all are well and healthy.

Happy Birthday to our June babies and a warm welcome to new members Susan Schweikhart and Chantal Walker.

Guild Business

Growing diversity with the guild – Aleeda Crawley, our team member of the Inclusivity & Diversity Committee gave us an update on the MQG’s actions going forward.

Board Elections – The ’20-’21 slate of officers were presented. Once finalized by vote, the new board will begin in July.

Returning board members are President- Rachel BondBaron (to complete her second year term) Vice President- Kathy Morganroth, Secretary – Jennifer Ireton and Treasurer – Lenny van Eijk.

Programs will have a brand new team consisting of Jeanine Bowen, Sue Erdreich and Samantha Linehan.

We thank Crista Bresnahan and Janet Van Treuren for their hard work and wonderful programming they provided for us over the past year.

Voting by Google form was sent to each member of the guild.

Just a reminder, we are looking for members to join a committee to start planning our challenge quilt. If you are interesting in participating on planning this quilt, please contact a board member.

Guest Lecture

We welcomed Carol Lyles Shaw to our meeting. She presented a wonderful talk on her colorful quilting journey. Her colors are vibrant and her style is modern improv.

Some of us were also fortunate enough to attend Carol’s virtual workshop on June 27th. We thank you Carol for both opportunities.

We had an update on the Connected Project with Berene Campbell. Information was shared for those who will be participating.

May 21st Meeting Recap

Time for another recap of our virtual meeting. Another well attended meeting with 47 members logged on.

We are met with heartfelt sadness in learning of the death of Michelle Reiter’s husband. Our deepest condolences to her and her family.

We were informed Sallie Rosal is growing stronger each day! We wish her continual healing.

We wished a virtual ‘Happy Birthday’ to our May babies! The free fat quarter list keeps growing.

We sent out a warm welcome to our newest members Paul Daniels and Marie Cloutier.

Guild Business

Board Elections We thank you all for participating in our email solicitation form. Our current nominee for Programs is Samantha Linehan. She may be joined by one or more nominees to run Programs. The official slate of officers will be presented at the June meeting.

Quiltcon 2021 – To Be virtual. Due to all the changes of social gatherings this event will take on a new appearance for 2021. We will bring you details of classes and quilt submission deadlines as they are clarified and communicated to us.

Here are the guidelines for what was previously known as the Quiltcon Charity Quilt. Now is the time to start to generating ideas. We will be organizing a committee for a guild wide quilt submission. If you happened to miss it, Melanie Tuazon was featured recently on the MQG website for her Character Improv Quilt Piecing Tutorial. Head over to the MQG website and download her PDF from the members resources and try your hand at improv piecing.

Programs

Next up we had our first virtual lecture with Berene Campbell from Happy Sew Lucky. She is a modern quilter, pattern designer and community project instigator who lives in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Berene provided a very fascinating talk with slide show. We are so excited to start working with her on the following project.

In place of a workshop we will be participating in a collaborative quilting project designed by Berene. Sign ups are open through Friday, May 29th. Details of this program have been emailed to all members.

The entire fee for participation will be donated to Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

In June Carole Lyles Shaw will be joining our meeting to present her lecture. Her workshop later in the month is completely sold out.
