Reminder: Open Sew & Charity Sew Combo – this Saturday 10/7

Our Open Sew is this Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 10 a.m. – 4pm at the Community Church of Cedar Grove, 65 Bowden Street, Cedar Grove, NJ (where we meet for our monthly guild meetings).

We have SIX hours of sewing scheduled! Can’t make it for the entire time? Come when you can!

So many inquiries have come in about contributing to the recent hurricane relief, we are combining & using the opportunity of this open sew to also make progress on our charity efforts. *Of course, if you have a project you’re trying to get done, please bring it. It will be nice to sew and spend time together.

For our charity sewing – quick and easy is the key, so we can get as much done as possible. We can work together in groups to knock out some projects: sew with a buddy or make a team!
*We’ll bring our donated fabric, scraps, and a big roll of batting.
Don’t feel like piecing? That’s cool – there are few quilt tops already made just waiting to be to be quilted. We’ve cut out big pieces of coordinated fabric for backs, some new tops, or there are a few precut pillowcases if you’d like to try one of those.
*Do you have any jelly rolls or charm packs you haven’t found any use for? (Then let me see your jelly roll!) Bring them along – maybe they will work with something in the charity stash – and no cutting needed! Large pieces for backings are especially appreciated.

*Besides fabric and batting, we will have a cutting station, including an AccuQuilt (Diane will be there to show us the magic of the AccuQuilt and we’ll cut all the things at one time!); an ironing station, and some extension cords.

Please bring:
*sewing machine and your basic supplies
*small ironing set up (the more the merrier), or ironing board (let us know if you’re able to bring one)
*extension cords/surge protectors
*your smiling face

Food stuffs: bring snacks, bring your own lunch (there is a microwave & fridge available), or bring cash $$$ to buy from the Cedar Grove Deli. We’ll place an order.
***
Please bring any finished pillowcases you have – I heard you all made SO MANY!!!!!
Thanks so much, and looking forward to seeing you all
-Rachel

Quiltcon Charity Quilt blocks

Hello NJMQG! Melanie here, with an update on our MQG charity quilt for Quiltcon.

Our winning design is Stars in Stars! Members can choose a star that they love to make and embed it into the overall design. It will be exciting to see how the stars come out and members should be able to find their stars in the finished quilt. (This is just a mock-up, our finished quilt will look very different!)

Stars in Stars

As you can see, it’s composed of blocks. Some are squares and some are half-square triangles (HSTs).

At the September guild meeting, we handed out bags with blocks and instructions. The instructions specify a background color and a star color. HST blocks also specify a solid triangle color for one half of the HST. This is so that the overall design emerges. Blocks that are white on white can be used as background or star– they will blend together but also add a lot of interest to the “negative space” of the quilt.

Here are some example blocks by Betsy and Kathy. If you post yours on Instagram, use the hashtags #njmqgcharityquilts and #quiltconcharityquilt .

If you would still like to pick up a block, limited supplies will be available at the Open Sew meeting on October 7.

For star inspiration, search on Pinterest. Here is a post of traditional stars, and here is a tutorial for wonky stars (you will have to adjust the size).

Blocks are due at the October meeting on the 21st.
