MQG

This years MQG’s Community Outreach Quilt challenge is all about angles. You can read about it here. We have decided to combine our voices together and using fusible applique, we have transferred our “voice prints” to fabric.
30 members made a voiceprint. The top was still being pieced, but here’s a sampling of some of the blocks.

We are still looking for a volunteer to quilt it. Send a board member an email if you are interested!

Programs Update

Our Star in the West BOM is finishing up. There’s an open sew on October 23. Can’t wait to see all the finishes in November! There’s still time to catch up!

We had a great workshop with Maria Shell. We worked on some Kitchen Sink Quilting–The Art of Making Do. Using leftover fabric, UFO’S, orphan blocks, and random strips of fabric to make them into a fun improvisational masterpieces. The focus of this workshop was on bit making (creating small improvisation-ally cut and pieced traditional quilt blocks) and composition.

The zipper pouch collection was a success! All in all we collected 65 for SOFIA! The top makers were Tari (15) and Jann (9) and they were the lucky recipients of some goodies. Thanks to all who made them! I’m sure they will be treasured by whoever receives one.

We had a great charity open sew day. If anyone has quilts to donate, Elinore said she can pick up! Elinore also has fabric for kits if anyone is interested in making something! We are accepting any size, but prefer some larger sizes. These will hopefully be making their way to some Afghan refugees, soon.

We have some fun things coming up!
Our very own, Daniela, will be teaching us how to make the Chore Coat by Patchwork and Poodles. This class will take place
IN PERSON at the Wayne Library. November 6 and 13 from 12:00-4:00. Everyone will have their own table. Masks required.

At our November meeting we will be having a guest speaker, Cindy Grisdela. She will being talking to us about Playing with Colors! (personally one of my favorite things!) Cindy is an award-winning artist who’s happiest in her studio surrounded by piles of colorful fabrics. In this lecture and trunk show, she’ll use examples of her work over the last 30 years to take away some of the mystery about choosing colors effectively for your quilts. Not sure what colors “go” together? This is the lecture to reduce your stress about color!

And as time is just flying, we are starting to think about our holiday stuff! This year we are doing a Party Popper swap (like a UK Christmas Cracker) Start saving some paper towel rolls. In the tube you will stuff all sorts of goodies you can fit (like buttons, charms, tweezers, embroidery threads or scissors, seam rippers, thread, tea, candy, mints, small charm packs, zippers, pens…you get the idea! Then you wrap it all in a fat quarter and send it to your partner. Sign ups went out, so keep an eye out and sign up today! We are asking everything be sent early to avoid it getting stuck in any of the mail issues happening. Email with any questions.

Show and Tell

And now to our favorite part

See you next month!

OPEN SEW – this Saturday Sept 25

Hello friends – We’ve got a MEET-UP / OPEN SEW planned for this Saturday Sept 25th.

Headed by Sarah Fader and our Charity team.

Sarah presented our new quilt drive initiative at our recent guild meeting -New Jersey is receiving about 10,000 Afghan evacuees who will be sheltered at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst for an undetermined amount of time.
As we will soon be welcoming Afghan refugee families to our area, we will be collecting quilts specifically for this purpose.

Anyone can participate in whatever way they are able to.

We will be collecting already finished quilts, and blankets at this time and can supply batting and backing if you have a finished top ready to donate.

We will keep you posted about where/when we will be collecting finished items in the future.

Project Linus is collecting baby sized quilts, so we will focus on larger pieces – from lap/throw size quilts and up.

The pattern = it is up to you on how simple or complex you’d like to make it. There is no theme or restrictions. Only that it can be washed, used, and loved.

If you would like to attach a welcome note – please do.
