Rayna Gillman Workshops

The NJMQG is thrilled to host Rayna Gillman for 2 workshops October 5th and 6th.

Rayna describes her workshops as bring process-oriented, taking a playful, relaxed, “what if?” approach. Participants are encouraged to use their intuition, to experiment, and to enjoy the results of “happy accidents.”

October 5th, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm
Caldwell United Methodist Church: 8 Academy Rd., Caldwell NJ, 07006
Improvising with Rectangles: Variations on this simple geometric shape will open up infinite possibilities for modern design. Using solids, you will create one of a kind units to combine in endless combinations. As you design your no-pattern quilt on the wall, we’ll discuss color, value, use of space and composition. And you will learn to use your eyes and your instincts!

You won’t be able to resist experimenting with clean design in this basic versatile shape. Come play, and you’ll go home with lots of ideas for new modern quilts

October 6th, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm
Community Church – Cedar Grove: 65 Bowden Rd., Cedar Grove, NJ 07009
No Strings Attached – “Go Fly a Kite”:
Discover a totally new way to combine stripes with negative space by working the angle! Slice without a ruler and be ready for a surprise or two.

You’ll fall in love with these (and other) modern versions of the string quilt! Use a limited palette or go wild with straps! Put your own personality into these modern string quilts; no two blocks or quilts alike!

Modern and contemporary or wild and funky – your granny won’t recognize these exciting, new ways to make string quilts. Forget about using and ripping off that pesky paper foundation – these are improv, no-ruler, string quilts that are easy and fun to make! No two blocks or quilts alike!

To help us plan programs and workshops with your interests in mind, please share your thoughts about the following questions with your group and record the group consensus/answers (one person can do this).  Use the back of the sheet if needed. Thank you.

  1.   What past workshops have you especially enjoyed?  Are there any offered by NJMQG in the past that you would like to see repeated?
  2.   What skills or techniques are you interested in learning?
  3.   Which “professional” quilters would you like to see offering a workshop to NJMQG?
  4.   What challenges/monthly projects would you participate in? (bees, exchanges with other guilds, skill builders, minis, pouches, embellishment, etc)
