October 15th Meeting Recap

Greetings Guild!

For our October Zoom meeting we had 51 attendees. We had 9 tickets paid for by non members for our guest lecturer Sara Trail, which in turn we donated to the Social Justice Sewing Academy.

We also welcomed two new members Meghan Johnson and Ann Marston.

Guild Business

Community Outreach Quilt Challenge – After some Zoom workshops, the participants of the COQC completed their assigned blocks and were asked to mail them back to Margy for assembly ASAP. We hope to have a photo for next month’s meeting of the assembled top.

Quiltcon Updates – Anyone who wishes to submit a quilt has until November 30th. Check the website for guidelines.

Can you take the survey? If you feel like you have participated in Modern making in any way, please do! It’s open until mid-November. Questions inquire about your own personal making, and the trends and people who have influenced you. It is anonymous (thanks, Qualtrics!), contains 15 questions, and should take you 5-8 minutes to complete.

Charity Updates – After having a wonderful tutorial from Sue Erdreich at our September meeting, we are asking for you to make some pillowcases for Giving Hope Network. They are collecting them before Thanksgiving.

Down load the instructions from here.

We also have received our preprinted quilt labels for charity quilts. If you have completed a quilt for charity and would like to attach a NJMQG label to it, please contact Elinore Gordon or a board member.

Honoring Margy Schilling – Former President

We were able to watch as Margy opened the quilt we made for her in appreciation of her service as NJMQG President for the 2017-2019 term. We are grateful for Margy’s leadership during her term. As well, we thank all who participated in the construction of this quilt.

Guest Lecturer Sara Trail from Social Justice Sewing Academy

What a wonderful time we had hearing from Sara Trail. From her enthusiastic childhood, through her energetic teenage years, and into her academic excellence in higher education, Sara provided us the insight to forming her Social Justice Sewing Academy.

SJSA empowers young people to use sewing to express themselves and create opportunities for growth and change.

Updates: Our 2021 MQG Community Outreach Quilt

fabric prep

The MQG’s Community Outreach quilt for QuiltCon 2021 is focused on curved piecing with a given color palette. As in previous years the NJMQG is participating and we are well on our way. A shout out to our members: Lenny van Eijk who came up with a great design, Kathy Morganroth for getting our templates in order, and Margy Schilling who has sorted out organizing, prep and co-ordination of all the parts.

Thanks to all who are already participating on our community quilt: 24 guild members were sent kits! About 20 of us hung out in three Zoom sessions. Twelve have already returned pieced blocks, and they look fabulous!!

cutting & prepping fabric kits

Hopefully the rest are on their way. Please let us know if you have any problems with the blocks or find that you don’t have the time you thought you would.
We have a small group lined up to piece the top together, but we will let you know if we are in need of more assistance in this area.

There is another opportunity to help with this quilt: It needs a back! We have a few yards of the blues, and plenty of orange scraps. Anyone interested in doing a bit of improv???  If we have one person to sew it, I bet we can get a few others to consult over Zoom.

Think about it, and let Margy know, or we can talk more about it at the Guild meeting on Thursday.

Picture

The Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) is a youth education program founded in 2017; it aims to bridge artistic expression using textile media with activism to advocate for social justice. Through a series of hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country, SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change. Many of the young people make art that explores issues such as gender discrimination, mass incarceration, gun violence and gentrification. The powerful imagery they create in cloth tells their stories. These quilt blocks have been displayed in museums, galleries and quilt shows across the country. This visual dialogue bridges differences in race, age and socioeconomics and sparks conversations and action in households across the country.

Join Sara Trail in this inspiring talk as she shares how youth use quilting as a platform of personal expression through the Social Justice Sewing Academy.

Check your video & audio settings before we start and don’t hesitate to ask if you need some guidance about where your settings are. Since we plan on a Q&A time, familiarize yourself with the ZOOM buttons: there is a chat button that looks like a speech bubble. Feel free to use this to ask questions during her talk.

UFO, Show & Tell photos – To better facilitate the meeting; please send our Programs team – Samantha, Jeanine & Sue (programs(at)njmqg.com) any photos BY WEDNESDAY to add into our usual meeting slide show – specify the MONTH and if your item is for the UFO section or Show & Tell etc.

We are looking forward to seeing you.

Here are a few Zoom reminders if you have not joined us this way before. Please help us give you the best meeting we can…

-Check your microphone & speaker settings before the meeting. Call us beforehand if you need help at all.

-Turn off your t.v. in the background so it doesn’t compete with your microphone

Thanks so much & SEE you Thursday!!
